December 31, 2011

Last day of processed snack foods and we are going out with a bang. Our version of New Year’s celebrating will involve lots of breaded cheezy snacks and other horribly unhealthy foods. And of course we will be home and in bed by 9:00 – life is not too exciting when you have infant twins.

Hope everyone else is enjoying their new year celebrations as well!

“The 2012 Experiment” starts in two days.  First up is the removal of all processed snack foods.  Two days until I have to give up chips, crackers, granola bars and other snacks.  I know this month is going to be the hardest on mom.  I need to find something healthy to replace my daily chips.  :(  I’m hoping by the end of this year that I don’t even miss these foods.  Maybe I can retrain my body to crave fruits and vegetables instead of chips?  Not likely, but I am going to try.

My first project for this weekend will be to make some new snack foods for the family.  Some things that will work in the kids lunches and to grab quickly after school.  Check back under the recipe tab in a couple days and I will share our first ventures into homemade snacks.  Hopefully we can make some tasty granola bars and crackers to fill the gaps between meals.

The older kids are actually looking forward to the coming year.  I hope they continue to be excited as the year goes on!  The twins haven’t really had any processed snacks yet, so they won’t know the difference.

Personally, I plan to spend today and tomorrow enjoying all of the yummy things I will be giving up soon.  Maybe I can make myself so sick of chips and cookies that I won’t miss them.  :)

Welcome!

This is where I will document my year-long effort to wean a fairly typical suburban family of six from processed foods and products and return to a simpler way of eating and living.

Give me a few days to get things started.  See you again soon!
